WORDS

For written submissions, please submit these either as Rich Text Format (.rtf) files or Word files (.doc / .docx).

On elements of style: speech / dialogue should be presented using single inverted commas ( ‘ ) rather than double quotation marks ( ” ). Punctuation should be outside the quoted passage (eg, ‘Here are your shoes’, she said.)

Titles of long-form texts (eg, feature films, novels, books, albums, plays, magazines) should be presented in italics (A Clockwork Orange); titles of short-form texts (short stories, essays, articles, song titles) should be presented in inverted commas (‘I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream’). Examples: ‘1979’ is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins which appears on the album Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness; ‘The Midnight Meat Train’ is a short story by Clive Barker that appears in the collection Books of Blood.

Non-Fiction material should include referencing according to the Harvard style. (We prefer the Cite Them Right interpretation of Harvard’s referencing style: see here.)

Where books or films are discussed in non-fiction work, these should be accompanied by an indication of the author / director, and year of publication: eg, The House with Laughing Windows (Pupi Avati, 1975); Pupi Avati’s 1975 film The House with Laughing Windows; Pupi Avati’s The House with Laughing Windows (1975). All of these are acceptable.
